With September now just weeks away, that dreaded first day of the month is looming. Every year on September 1st when leases begin, Boston transforms into a circus of moving vans, horrendous traffic, and excited (yet aggressive) college kids eagerly moving into their new student apartments. While the majority of commotion takes place in areas concentrated with college and university housing, such as Allston and Kenmore, essentially no area of Boston is granted immunity. Here are some helpful tips to ensure a smooth and steady move amidst the chaos of the day.
First, make sure you touch base with your real estate agent or landlord regarding when you are able to pick up the keys to your new place. Sometimes keys are given out by noon on moving day, and other times they are given the day before. It’s important to get this information ahead of time so you can plan the structure of your moving day accordingly.
Next, when packing up your belongings, try to take a look around you and gage how much space your items will take up in a moving truck. Consider furniture in this estimate as well. Know the size of the van you are ordering so that when moving day rolls around, you’re not in a situation where all of your belongings won’t fit for transport.
It is so important to reserve movers or a moving truck as far ahead in advance as possible. Due to the high demand, many moving truck rental companies have rented out all of their trucks before September 1st, so make sure you stay ahead of the game and beat the masses by booking one early.
Also, make sure you stock up on sufficient packing materials. Newspaper, bubble wrap, and plenty of tape are essentials. And of course boxes, which you can easily get for free from the supermarket, liquor stores, etc.
What is most arguably the worst part of the day is the traffic and congestion. Almost every vehicle is double parked and in some cases even triple parked! It also takes twice as long to drive from one location to the other. It’s important to be a defensive driver and be aware of those around you, especially when there are other vehicles battling you for a prime spot to park the vehicle and unload.
Perhaps the most useful piece of advice, however, is to avoid a September 1st move in date altogether. If there’s no sense of urgency for you to be out of your old home, then take your time and move in within the next couple of days. By doing so, you will avoid all the traffic and chaos that takes place on that dreaded first day of September.
